Scrub Club Inspires Future Health Care Leaders in Hammond

HAMMOND, NY –

The Hammond Central School district successfully completed its Scrub Club, a hands-on health care exploration program that ran from October 28 through November 14. Designed to introduce students to the world of health professions, Scrub Club provided second graders in the district with the opportunity to learn directly from local medical professionals.

During club sessions, students were equipped with blood pressure cuffs, stethoscopes, scrubs, and surgical gowns, allowing them to practice personal health care skills. In addition to classroom lessons, the program included a hospital visit where students observed health care personnel in action, bringing their learning to life.

“To say I am honored to be part of this outstanding program would be an understatement,” Club Advisor and 2nd grade teacher Erica Webster said. “The first-hand experience made these program extraordinary and inspired students to consider health occupations in the future.”

Beyond sparking curiosity about health care careers, the program offered students with meaningful exposure that can help ease anxiety and break down the stigma often associated with hospital visits and medical care. By engaging directly with professionals and participating in hands-on activities, students gained confidence and comfort in navigating health care environments.

“Our Red Devils have had the best experience with North Star Health Alliance and the staff from Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center & Medical Campus,” Superintendent Lauren Morley said. “This enriching opportunity paves the way for more community collaboration and project-based learning at Hammond. We couldn’t be more thankful for this partnership and proud of our students.”
